NBA All-Star Weekend Data Visualisation 🏀 📊
This year I had the opportunity to work with the folks at Zartico to design and develop a showcase animated #dataviz highlighting how their data enriches the understanding of expenditure patterns and mobility trends among both residents and visitors in the vibrant locale of Salt Lake City whilst a significant event, NBA All-Star Weekend, was taking place.
🗺 This multi-scale visualisation involved looking at ‘pattern of movement/spend’ data from a Country – State – CBD scale, we wanted to showcase where people were travelling from to attend the weekend and whilst they were in the city where they travelled to.
💡 This involved designing multiple visualisation techniques from ‘mobility arcs’ showcasing the movement of people as tiny orbs travelling along arcs to ‘density driven spheres’ that glow where people congregate. I utilised heatmaps to show the patten of mobility over a day and intricate wireframe mesh animation along with some nice VFX to showcase specific buildings where they are cutting live interviews into the animation. Trying to move away from arcs the final section utilises ‘origin-destination’ routing to show the direction of travel from key venues to places within the wider Utah state. The full gamut of viz effects and design I have developed over the past years were utilised in this one!
🏔 I also utilised fully immersive 3d terrain for this visualisation so our workflows needed to accommodate designing beautiful looking mountains whilst maintain the data sat correctly on that geometry. You’ll notice around the 01:40 mark the spheres in the mountains are slightly bigger and glow a little more – this is to highlight the visitors utilising the ski-centres.
💎 Geometry runs through the entire composition, the Salt Lake City logo along with their ‘crystal’ branding and font is utilised heavily in the intro/outro and for any call-out metrics. Aligning the visuals to the clients branding (Salt Lake City) is something that is always important. There is a lot more to say about the ‘why’ and ‘how’ and if anyone is interested in knowing more about this animation feel free to message me!
